Regina’s newest annual festival celebrating Africa’s diverse cultures will launch this summer. Regina AfroFest 2014 will take place on Saturday, July 5 at Victoria Park, Downtown Regina. This vibrant festival will take the audience on a journey to Africa with live music performances, cultural dances, African food and arts and craft displays.
Regina AfroFest was formed from a vision to create an avenue to bring people together to experience African music, culture, and traditions; and especially to increase awareness and interest in African culture.
The festival will feature African performances by international and local groups showcasing a wide range of African music styles including, Afrobeats, reggae, traditional drumming and African hip hop. This year’s line-up will feature Njacko Backo (Cameroon) a multi-talented artist and master of the kalimba (thumb piano) and Master drummer Amara Kanté (Guinea) and his musical ensemble Kouraba Folila. Also performing are Coffieman (Ghana), Saskatoon reggae group Oral Fuentes Band, African Princess Dance Troupe and more.
Regina AfroFest will offer something for everyone. There’ll be face painting and storytelling for the kids. The audience will also be treated to a marketplace-type setup with authentic African arts, crafts and traditional dishes.
Jump.ca, a SaskTel Authorized Dealer, will be the presenting sponsor of Regina AfroFest 2014. As a local Saskatchewan business, Jump.ca recognizes the important role cultural events such as Regina AfroFest play in building vibrant communities in the province.
Tickets are available online www.reginaafrofest.com from May 1, 2014 and at select Jump.ca stores from June 1, 2014.
